Claiming Deduction for Medical if not a part of Salary

    Clause : Allowance to the extent exempt under section 10:

    Kindly clarify whether Medical Expenses (OPD) borne by the taxpayer can be considered for deduction U/S 17(2) for claiming rebate from taxable income even though the same has not been a part of salary structure (Medical Allowance) & the tax payer has actually incurred the expenses on the same in the FY.

    Dear Sir

    You can only claim deduction for something which was given to you.

    As medical allowance was not given to you by your employer, therefore you cannot claim deduction for the same.
