Do senior citizens (between age 60 and 80) qualify for exemption of Rs.15,000 under Medical Reimbursement?

    Your case is in Salary,

If any person has received any Allowances, say HRA, Medical, Travelling, within the scope of salary,
And if such person has shown appropriate expenditure in front of respective Allowances,
Than such Allowances shall be Exempt.

P.S. - HRA Exemption calculation as in sec 10(13A), and other Allowance Recd or Expenditure made, whichever is Less.

** Pls clarify your Q properly.

My dad is senior citizen (73 years). He is retired thus he has income from sources other than salary. His income falls into 10% income tax bracket. So, my question has been that while computing my dad's income tax, can I allow exemption for Rs.15,000 against medical bills?

    Is the question clear now?

No, In such case your father can't get any exemption benefit under sec. 10 for medical expense.
Your father has made medical expense, but in front of such expense there is no Medical Allowance, as part of salary of your father.

** But your father can pay a medical premium (mediclaim) and can avail benefit upto Rs. 20,000 deduction under section 80D.

    Thanks for the reply Vaibhav!

One of my father's income sources is pension. Is this not considered as salary?

Is pension considered as salary or non-salary source of income?

    * Pension, from past Employer, can* come under salary, when we file ITR-1, there is one common space for pension and salary, if received from Employer.

    * Pension received from any other, is Income from Other Sources.

    * But in any case, you can't get benefit of Medial Bill expense.
