Do I have to pay 12.36% service tax to my landlord on rent paid for residential use

    I am paying monthly rent Rs 24000 to my landlord for residential use of her flat from May 2014. Today she informed me that I will have to pay 12.36% on my monthly rental of Rs 24000 as she has become a assessee of service tax . Please help me out in know if I need to pay service tax of 12.36% on rent paid to her . I have signed 11 month leased agreement for residential purpose for me and my family.

    Dear @M SETH

    The govt has specifically exempted Service Tax on Rent received from renting of Residential Property.

    Your landlord may not be knowing this. You can intimate this to her that Service Tax is not applicable on Rent received from Residential Property.

    Feel free to ask in case of any other query.
