    Hey all,

I obtained a service tax certificate issued on 9-7-2012. Since then,
    • No business was done, hence service tax wasn't paid.
    • No returns were filed.
    • No bank account opened with it.
I would now like to surrender this, since I no longer require it. I found this page http://www.charteredclub.com/procedure-for-surrender-of-service-tax-registration that has instructions on how to surrender the certificate.

I find that the above linked page mentions that Rs.20000 is the maximum fee for not filing returns. But in this case, no business was done. Would I still have to pay any fine?

    Thank you

  2. You need not to pay any penalty. If there is no service provided during the relevant period, no need of service tax return, including 'NIL' return, to be filed.
