    Hello,
    I am a Sri Lankan student.
    I completed my PhD last year. Few months ago I came to India to join a post doctoral research program. The amount of post doctoral fellowship is Rs. 50,000 per month. My position as a post doc researcher in this institute is a fixed position and only for 12 months contract. Now, the institutions start to deduct 20% from my monthly fellowship of Rs. 50,000 as income tax (so monthly what I get is Rs. 40,000, after deducting of 20% from the monthly fellowship amount of Rs. 50,000).

    Note that the visa issued by the embassy is also research visa (not employment visa).

    May I know if I am liable to pay income tax of 20% monthly, under these circumstance.
