WHETHER AN INDIAN ARMED FORCES (MINISTRY OF DEFENCE) NEEDS TO OBTAIN PAN & FILE INCOME TAX RETURN

    A unit of Indian Armed Forces is operating a Canteen Stores Department and thereby depositing all its sales receipts in a savings bank account operated in a Scheduled Bank. A letter has been received by them from the Income Tax Department relating to Non PAN Transaction relating to cash deposit in a savings bank account as per AIR information. They have not obtained any PAN.

    Now my query is:
    1. Whether the Indian Armed Forces need to obtain PAN and file Income Tax Return
    (as per my view the Income of Armed Forces is exempt u/s 10(23AA))

    2. What steps need to be taken for the Non PAN Transaction letter received from the Income Tax Department.
